Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is a kitchen staple that has become a popular part of many people’s daily routines. It now comes in two main forms: the classic liquid and convenient tablets. Here’s how they compare.
What is apple cider vinegar?
ACV is made in two fermentation steps. First, yeast turns the natural sugars in crushed apples into alcohol. Then, bacteria convert that alcohol into acetic acid — the compound that gives all vinegar its sour taste and sharp smell. Unfiltered ACV may look cloudy because of a sediment often called “the mother”.
A note on the research
You’ll find lots of bold claims about ACV online. Scientific research on its effects is still limited, and many studies are small. We’d rather be honest: enjoy ACV as part of a balanced lifestyle, and be cautious of products that promise dramatic results.
Liquid vs tablets
| Liquid ACV | ACV tablets | |
|---|---|---|
| Taste | Very sour; many people find it hard to drink | No sour taste |
| Teeth & throat | Acidic — should always be diluted; may affect tooth enamel | No acidic liquid in contact with teeth |
| Measuring | Needs measuring and diluting | Fixed amount per tablet |
| Cooking use | Great in dressings and chutneys | Not for cooking |
Tips if you use ACV
- Never drink undiluted liquid vinegar.
- With tablets, follow the serving size on the label and take with water.
- If you have acidity, stomach problems, diabetes, or take regular medicines, check with your doctor first.
